How to Use Midjourney What It Is and How It Works

What Is Midjourney?

Midjourney is an independent research lab dedicated to artificial intelligence research and the name of AI software. The software (also called Midjourney) utilizes advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to create images from text, known as text-to-image conversion.

What sets Midjourney apart from other text-to-image programs is its ability to create highly detailed, precise, and defined images. These images can have dimensions of up to 1,792 x 1,024 pixels. Descriptive text is needed to instruct the AI to create the image. The more information provided in the description, the more accurate the resulting image will be.

Previously, Midjourney offered a freemium version of its software, allowing users to create a limited number of images at no cost. However, soon this version will disappear, and the program will only have a paid option. The new version will have additional benefits, including faster and greater creation capacity.

How Does Midjourney Work?

To use Midjourney, you need to have a Discord account and join the official channel, Access to the application requires accepting the invitation.

Once inside Discord, navigate to the “newbies” channel and enter the command /imagine. This command will prompt the system to display a text input box. You can then provide descriptive text to instruct the software to generate four images. After a few seconds, the images will appear and you can choose the one that best fits your purpose.

It is very important that the description is as detailed as possible so that the AI can create a detailed image.

The terms of service must be accepted the first time the software is used. Additionally, there is the option to add Midjourney on your own Discord server. You should click on the bot and select the option to add it to the server.

In addition to the information above, a number of commands indicate a number of settings, preferences, or parameters. These are the most common ones:

  • /imagine: this is the most commonly used command since it generates a matrix of four images from a descriptive text.
  • /relax: serves to achieve a free creation, but the waiting time may be extended.
  • /fast: in this case, the creation of the image is fast but has an additional cost.
  • /private: used to get private creations.
  • /public: used to get public creations.
  • /help: used to get information about the bot.
  • /info: can be used to get user profile information.
  • /settings: allows you to view and change preferences through a series of buttons.
  • /subscribe: used to create a unique link to the Discord account's subscription page.

What Uses Does Midjourney Have in Marketing?

One of the main benefits of Midjourney within marketing is getting images to accompany textual content or creating rapid prototypes of concept art, allowing you to start working.

The fact that Midjourney can create customized and unique images can also have many advantages within the advertising field, as production time and costs could be reduced. This, however, creates some controversy, as designers and artists consider this type of software a threat that jeopardizes their work.

What Are the Free Alternatives to Midjourney?

While Midjourney is discontinuing its free version, several other programs are available as alternatives, offering similar functionalities at no cost.

One such alternative is Openjourney, which can produce results comparable to Midjourney's and is completely free. However, you need a fairly powerful computer to run it and a compatible GPU to run it smoothly.

Another option is Leonardo AI, which is currently Midjourney's main competitor. Leonardo AI is still in the testing phase but allows you to create a limited number of free images per day. One of its strengths is the availability of different image-generation engines, which can be useful when you are looking for a specific aesthetic.

Other useful and free software options exist, such as Blue Willow, DALL-E, and Adobe Firefly. These tools can generate images very similar to Midjourney but with some limitations.

In conclusion, Midjourney’s ability to rapidly and affordably create images has the potential to impact the field of marketing and advertising significantly. However, it remains to be seen whether it can make compositions as unique and personalized as artists and designers can produce and how it will impact their work.
