DeepSeeks Game-Changing AI Technology

What Is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek is an emerging AI company based in Hangzhou, China. Its standout model, DeepSeek-R1, is designed to solve complex problems and has demonstrated performance comparable to the best chatbots globally, doing so at a fraction of the cost. According to BBC, DeepSeek's public low costs resulted in well-known chip producer, Nvidia, losing "almost $600bn (£482bn) of its market value on Monday - the biggest one-day loss in US history."

One standout feature of DeepSeek is that its models are open-source, allowing the developer community to inspect and improve the software. DeepSeek does have its limitations, however, such as its inability to discuss politically sensitive topics. Additionally, it has already begun facing some challenges that have forced it to limit registrations for the time being.

The Origin Story

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, an AI expert who studied computer science and electrical information engineering at Zhejiang University. Liang previously ran the High-Flyer hedge fund, which specialized in AI-based models. He strongly believes that innovation is not solely dependent on massive investments: "More investment doesn’t necessarily lead to more innovation. If it did, big companies would have already monopolized all innovations," said Liang Wenfeng to Chinese media outlet 36Kr.

Liang founded DeepSeek with an initial capital of 10 million yuan and assembled a team of recent graduates from China’s top universities to work on this project. His bold approach was key to overcoming the limitations imposed by export restrictions on technology to China, boosting the country’s AI development as a result.

Differences Between DeepSeek and ChatGPT

While both DeepSeek and ChatGPT are advanced language models, there are notable differences:

  • Open Source: DeepSeek-R1 is entirely open-source under an MIT license, allowing for commercial and academic use without restrictions. In contrast, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is not fully open-source.

  • Training Efficiency: DeepSeek has managed to train its models at significantly lower costs compared to OpenAI, questioning the need for huge investments in advanced hardware to develop high-performance AI models.

  • Transparency in Reasoning: DeepSeek stands out for showing its reasoning process before providing an answer, helping users understand how a conclusion is reached. On the other hand, ChatGPT provides the final answer without detailing the underlying thought process. Some also claim that it generates more human, creative ideas than ChatGPT.

Advantages of DeepSeek

DeepSeek offers several advantages that set it apart in the AI market:

  • Training Costs: DeepSeek was trained for just a fraction of the cost of ChatGPT.

  • Customization: DeepSeek offers a high level of customization for specific applications while tools like ChatGPT have more limited customization in their default settings.

  • Efficiency: DeepSeek is more efficient, needing less energy and hardware to function.

Prompt Examples for DeepSeek

DeepSeek excels not only in providing clear and accurate answers but also in the versatility of its applications. Here are some practical examples of queries you can make to demonstrate how this tool can simplify complex tasks and address a myriad of topics.

  1. Data Analysis: "Analyse the following data and provide me with three actionable insights that I can use to improve my email open rate."

  2. Python Code Generation: "I'm working on a programming project and need help writing a Python function to calculate the factorial of a number. Also, explain how the code works line by line so I can understand it."

  3. Advanced Translation and Linguistic Analysis: "I have a text in English that I want to translate into French and Spanish. Also, let me know if the original text has any grammatical or stylistic errors."

  4. Refined Information Search and Comparison: "I need a comparison of the key differences between DeepSeek and ChatGPT in terms of technical capabilities, implementation costs, and accessibility. Also, include recent data on the usage of both platforms."

What Can We Expect in the Future From DeepSeek?

DeepSeek is leaving its mark on AI and changing the game by offering a more efficient, accessible, and transparent alternative to other chatbots on the market. Its ability to combine cutting-edge technology with an open-source model positions it as a disruptive tool in the global market.

That being said, the AI landscape is not stagnant. Competitors like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude continue to evolve and release updates. The real question is, can DeepSeek maintain its competitive edge and continue to surprise us with new innovations?

What is certain is that DeepSeek has already made it clear that it doesn’t need massive resources to lead the AI revolution.
